Betsy’s debut novel is called Charlie’s Patchwork Portal. Charlie’s 10th birthday doesn’t go quite as she had hoped. Instead of getting a cool gift from her beloved grandma, she gets a ho hum homemade quilt. But it turns out to be anything but normal.
The enchanted blanket hugs Charlie, it flies around the room with Elmer, her pet guinea pig, and takes her on amazing nighttime adventures. When Charlie’s grandmother dies, she and Elmer and her brother Josh set out on their own journeys of discovery. Charlie’s nocturnal expeditions take her and a very opinionated Elmer to a local farm, where they fight mad dogs with an angry guard llama named Francisco. Josh fights his own demons, mostly on-line, his keyboard clickety clacking with fury.
Charlie and Elmer also fly over the ocean where they find a joyful Grandma and the secret of the magic quilt. Or do they? Is Charlie’s quilt a gateway to new realms, or is she just dreaming her way to a happier reality?
